Laetitia Ohayon, or Tia, senior at SAR High School in Bronx, NY, was recently notified of her early decision acceptance to Barnard College in New York City! Tia applied Early Decision with Crimson after realizing Barnard was her dream school.
Tia worked with Crimson’s expert mentors and her strategist closely on both her extracurricular project and her college applications. Her strategist helped build a balanced school list to apply to and made suggestions of how Tia could invest her time to boost her overall profile both academically and with her extracurriculars. Tia took it into her own hands to make sure she capitalized on every opportunity to grow as a student and an individual.
Project Career: Tia’s Capstone
Tia is on a mission to help her peers discover their passions. While many students struggled to make strides forward in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tia used this time to launch Project Career, a platform to help students explore various career paths that their schools or traditional upbringings may not have exposed them to. While the website was just launched in late July, Tia has already attracted over 2,000 visitors, and that number grows daily. Project Career is one aspect of Tia’s strong profile that gained her an early decision acceptance to Barnard College.
While Tia considers the number of visitors to be a measure of success, she more highly prioritizes the potential for positive impact on Project Career’s visitors. The website hosts dozens of videos with Tia interviewing professionals from an array of fields, giving light to what a day in the life in each of these careers is truly like.
“One day, during my lunch period at school, a few friends of mine expressed how helpless they felt about deciding which possible careers to pursue, as college application season was just around the corner. They wanted to channel their focus into a specific professional and educational direction, but were unsure which path to pursue as they knew very few fields and professions,” reflects Tia. This moment paved the way for Project Career.
Over the course of a few months, Tia worked closely with an extracurricular and leadership mentor, Mitashee, who helped her with the logistics and oversight of this project. “Tia has been one of my favorite Crimson students because of her genuine passion to help others, her disciplined, self-starter work ethic, and strong communication skills. I am so proud of Project Career and the potential it has to make a real difference in the lives of so many young people in the world,” said Mitashee.
“Project Career's goal is to inform students on the wide varieties of career options in today's economy to which schools and the media do not typically expose us. By doing so, I hope to empower young people to be more aware of the choices they have in living fulfilling lives” said Tia.
Tia’s Extracurriculars
Outside of building Project Career, Tia’s schedule is packed to the brim. She is the president and founder of two clubs, the French club, and the Seekers Club. She is a member of a handful of other organizations and clubs. She balances these with a dual-curriculum class schedule, studying for the SATs, a busy family life, and navigating college applications.
“In the French Club, my partner and I educate and immerse American students and teachers in French culture through presentations, engaging conversations, and verbal practice of the French language. As a fluent French speaker, I have created a comfortable space for anyone to learn French phrases, customs, traditions, and compare their own cultures to European ones.”
“In the Seeker’s Club, we discuss deep philosophical questions and concepts about life, the universe, and human nature. I have accomplished a better understanding of listening to others, a method in which I've and other members have learned to dissect big problems or issues strategically, and to think critically about ambiguous and intellectual topics.”
Barnard Bound
After graduation, Tia will attend Barnard College. Crimson helped her work towards her dreams by supporting her with in-depth college application mentorship. Her strategist, application mentor, and education coordinator helped Tia make sure her application was as strong as possible and that her accomplishments and hard work really shined authentically through.
We are so excited to see how Tia grows at Barnard and continues to positively impact the world around her!
