How We Convert Your High School Grades to GPA

–

1. Input Your Grades and Course Information

  • Grade Type: First, you need to select the type of grades you will be entering: letter grades (e.g., A, B, C) or percentage grades (e.g., 85%, 92%).
  • Course Type: Specify the type of each course (AP, IB, Honors, Regular). This is important for calculating the weighted GPA, as more advanced courses add extra points to your GPA.

–

2. Grades are Converted

  • Letter Grades to GPA Points: If you enter letter grades, our calculator uses a standard conversion scale to translate these into GPA points. For example, an A or A+ is equivalent to 4.0 points, a B is 3.0 points, and so on.
  • Percentage Grades to GPA Points: If you enter percentage grades, our calculator converts these into GPA points based on predefined ranges. For example, a percentage between 90-100 converts to 4.0 points, while a percentage between 80-89 converts to 3.0 points.

3. We Calculate Your Unweighted GPA

  • For each course, the calculator multiplies the GPA points by the number of credits the course is worth.
  • It sums up these values for all courses.
  • Finally, it divides the total points by the total number of credits to get the unweighted GPA.

–

4. We Calculate Weighted GPA

  • The calculator adds additional points to the GPA for advanced courses (AP, IB HL, College-level courses add 1 point; Honors, IB SL, Dual Enrollment courses add 0.5 points).
  • It performs the same summation and division as for the unweighted GPA, but with the adjusted points.

How We Calculate Your Unweighted GPA

–

1. Convert grades to GPA points

  • AP English Language: A- = 3.7
  • Honors Maths: B+ = 3.3
  • AP US History: B- = 2.7
  • Chemistry: B = 3.0
  • Spanish II: A- = 3.7
  • Choir: A+ = 4.0
  • Physical Education: A = 4.0

–

2. Multiply GPA points by credits and sum them up

(3.7 * 3) + (3.3 * 4) + (2.7 * 3) + (3.0 * 4) + (3.7 * 3) + (4.0 * 2) + (4.0 * 2) = 11.1 + 13.2 + 8.1 + 12.0 + 11.1 + 8.0 + 8.0 = 71.5

–

3. Divide by total credits

Total credits = 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 21

Unweighted GPA = 71.5 / 21 = 3.40

–

How We Calculate Your Weighted GPA

–

1. Add weight to GPA points for advanced courses

  • AP English Language: 3.7 + 1 = 4.7
  • Honors Maths: 3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8
  • AP US History: 2.7 + 1 = 3.7
  • Regular courses remain the same.

–

2. Multiply weighted GPA points by credits and sum them up

(4.7 * 3) + (3.8 * 4) + (3.7 * 3) + (3.0 * 4) + (3.7 * 3) + (4.0 * 2) + (4.0 * 2) = 14.1 + 15.2 + 11.1 + 12.0 + 11.1 + 8.0 + 8.0 = 79.5

–

3. Divide by total credits

Weighted GPA = 79.5 / 21 = 3.79
