Student Profile for Yale’s Class of 2027

The admitted cohort overall includes students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four United States territories and 78 countries. The admissions office withholds detailed statistics about the demographics of the applicant pool as well as the group of admitted students each year, but told the News it would release a profile of matriculates in August.

“The strength and diversity of the applicant pool is much more important than the number of applications we receive,” said Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan in the announcement. “I am pleased that Yale College continues to appeal to promising students from a wide range of backgrounds. I am also proud that the admissions office has been able to continue its thoughtful whole-person review process of each applicant, even as the volume of applications has increased.”

Yale Regular Admissions Results for the Class of 2027

The number of applicants is up by nearly 50% compared to the pool of students that sought entry to the class of 2024. The 4.35% acceptance rate for the class for 2027 is the lowest in recent history, down from 4.46% for the class of 2026, 4.62 for the class of 2025, 6.54% for the class of 2024 and 5.91 for the class of 2023.

The record number of applications means that competition is intense to get into Yale. This data confirmed that college applications were up nationwide, especially at Ivy League and other highly selective schools. This trend is likely because many schools don’t require the SAT/ACT, and students are applying to more schools than ever before.

A Closer Look at Yale’s Admission History

Yale University is one of the most prestigious and selective universities in the United States. Its admissions process is highly competitive, with thousands of qualified applicants vying for a limited number of spots each year.

Here's a closer look at the history of Yale's admissions:

  1. Early Admissions: Yale was one of the first universities to introduce early admissions, a program that allows students to apply early and receive an admissions decision before the regular admissions cycle. This program was introduced in the 1950s and has since become popular among many colleges and universities in the United States.
  2. Application Numbers: Over the years, Yale has seen a significant increase in the number of applications it receives. In 2023, the university has received over 52,250 applications, a record high for the institution. This represents a significant increase from the 13,000 applications received in 1981.
  3. Selectivity: As the number of applications has increased, Yale has become increasingly selective. In 2023, the university has admitted just 4.35% of applicants, making it one of the most selective universities in the country. This represents a significant decrease from the 19.7% admission rate in 1981.
  4. Diversity: Yale has made significant strides in increasing the diversity of its student body. In recent years, the university has placed a greater emphasis on recruiting students from underrepresented groups, and as a result, the student body has become more diverse. In 2021, 53% of the admitted class self-identified as students of color.
  5. Holistic Admissions: Yale has a holistic admissions process, which means that the university considers a range of factors beyond just academic achievement. The admissions committee takes into account a student's extracurricular activities, leadership experience, essays, and recommendations, among other factors. This approach allows the university to evaluate applicants based on their individual strengths and accomplishments, rather than just their academic performance.

Overall, Yale's admissions process has become increasingly competitive and selective over the years, but the university remains committed to building a diverse and talented student body through a holistic approach to admissions.
