Choose your own topic

Use an academic writing sample that highlights creativity and innovation, or provide a response to a universal essay topic. At the College, living sustainably is more than just adopting a few “green” solutions to your lifestyle. It's about creating sustainable solutions that transform society by rethinking, redesigning, and restoring integrated systems. How do you see yourself engaging in curricular and co-curricular opportunities at CofC to protect the environmental systems upon which we depend?

St. Mary's Honor's Program

Those interested in joining the program are urged to complete their applications for undergraduate admission to St. Mary’s as early as possible. Top applicants will be invited by mail to make a separate application to the Honors Program. To complete their honors applications, candidates will participate in an interview (by long distance if necessary) and write an imaginary letter of recommendation describing themselves from the perspective of a scrupulously honest external observer.

This bond is grounded on the condition that you’ll obtain a blank, 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, and draw, write, sketch, shade, stencil, paint etc., anything and everything you want on it; your only limitations will be the boundaries of both sides on the single page. Now the catch… your submission, for the rest of your life, will always be the first thing anyone you meet for the first time will see. Whether it’s at a job interview, a blind date, arrival at your first Humanities class, before you even say, “hey,” they’ll already have seen your page, and formulated that first impression. Rogan Kersh, Wake Forest University Provost and Professor of Politics and International Affairs, is currently teaching a class entitled, ‘Millennials, Politics and the Future’ which explores research-based characteristics of Gen Y or the Millennial Generation to which you belong. The Common Application personal statement has the same prompts as last year. According to the Common App website, "The most popular essay prompt of the 2017-2018 application year (through January 5, 2018) is "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth..." (23.6%), followed by the topic of your choice option (22.5%), and "Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful..." (21.4%)."

Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. The Coalition Application personal statement has the same prompts as last year. Coalition Application schools may not require this personal statement essay or may have a different suggested or maximum word count requirement for it.

A few schools, such as Texas A&M, only accept one of the five prompts:

  • Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it. - Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus.
  • Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution. Has there been a time when you’ve had a long-cherished or accepted belief challenged? How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs?
  • What is the hardest part of being a teenager now?
  • What’s the best part? What advice would you give younger siblings or friends (assuming they would listen to you)? Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

The Apply Texas prompts are the same as last year. Schools may have changed the prompts that they accept. For example, Texas A&M will only accept Topic A. Apply Texas recommends keeping the essay between 500 and 750 words in length.

Topic A: What was the environment in which you were raised? Describe your family, home, neighborhood, or community, and explain how it has shaped you as a person.

Topic B: Most students have an identity, an interest, or a talent that defines them in an essential way. Tell us about yourself.

Topic C: You've got a ticket in your hand - Where will you go? What will you do? What will happen when you get there?
