Why study law in the UK?

Before we delve into UK law universities recognised in Singapore, let's first explore the myriad advantages of pursuing a law degree in the UK.

1. Internationally recognised degrees

UK law degrees are widely recognised globally, providing a strong foundation for a successful legal career. This qualification allows graduates to practise law in different countries like Singapore, Australia, and India, provided you meet specific country requirements.

Notably, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, esteemed for their legal education, ranked second and third in the QS World University Rankings for Law and Legal Studies.

2. Shorter degree duration

Students studying law in the UK have the option to complete their degree in as little as 3 years, either through the typical LLB (3 years) or a combined LLB (5+ years). This duration is notably shorter than the process in the US.

In the US, students first need to finish a Bachelor’s degree in any subject (as law isn’t an undergraduate degree), which takes 4 years. Subsequently, they proceed to complete their Juris Doctor (JD) degree over the next 3 years, resulting in a total duration of 7 years.

3. Robust legal system

As a hub of legal expertise, the UK offers an excellent environment for comprehending common law principles and experiencing an advanced legal system.

4. Emphasis on independent research

UK law programmes emphasise independent research, critical thinking, and practical application of legal theories — preparing students for real-world challenges.

5. Teaching excellence

Known for their academic excellence, the UK boasts distinguished faculty members and abundant resources, which collectively contribute to the provision of a high-quality education.

Is it competitive to study law?

Studying law in the UK is highly competitive. Most universities require a minimum of AAA as seen in the list above. Additionally, many universities mandate the LNAT, a two-part test involving computer-based multiple-choice questions and essay writing — assessing your aptitude for legal study. While the essay doesn't contribute to your LNAT score, it offers a chance to demonstrate your skill in constructing a persuasive argument and drawing a conclusion. Some universities may also conduct interviews. Successfully gaining admission to a law school requires dedication, preparation, and practice.
