Optimise your Academic Profile for Top US & UK Universities

If you are a student in Singapore, you have access to what is considered one of the best education systems in the world. As academic ability is one of the key considerations of top US and UK universities for prospective students, you will be in good standing if you plan to study overseas. However, many students here already score straight As -- so how can you elevate your academic profile and stand out from the masses?

The answer is simple. When it comes to academics, more is certainly more! By studying more subjects (and doing well in them), you are demonstrating academic excellence as well as a genuine desire to learn more than what is mandatory at your school - all traits top universities love.

Here are some additional subjects you may wish to pursue:

Triple Sciences

Taking all three sciences is not common in high school due to some limitations that schools place on the number and kind of subjects students can take. As a result, the maximum number most high school students take will be two at the IB or A Level.

Sitting for all three sciences is beneficial because:

  1. You can expand your choices in university, from Engineering to Medicine to Biochemistry. The typical Physics and Chemistry students do not meet the prerequisites of some medical schools and Biology and Chemistry students are unable to apply for engineering courses. Being able to take all three sciences will cover you for the vast majority of courses in university.
  2. Taking all 3 sciences at the high school level makes you a very academically competitive student for courses like medicine and other STEM-related courses. Although not explicitly stated in the entry requirements, a student with a solid foundation in all three sciences would have an edge over a student who only studied two sciences.

Further Mathematics

Mathematics is incredibly important for a large number of academic disciplines, notably Economics and Computer Science. While high schools in Singapore offer students the flexibility to take on mathematical subjects of varying difficulty and depth, you may find that it may be better to do more if you have an interest in mathematics or plan to enter a field where mathematics is very important. Taking Further Mathematics will not only prepare you for your university studies, but also give you an edge over other candidates with more basic mathematics qualifications when applying to universities.

See the non-exhaustive list of top UK school programs where Further Mathematics is highly recommended:

  • Degree in Mathematics in many universities
  • Cambridge/ Oxford/ Imperial Computer Science
  • Cambridge Engineering/ Oxford Engineering Science
  • LSE Economics/ Financial Mathematics and Statistics/ Data Science
  • Imperial Aeronautical Engineering/ Electrical and Information Engineering

Any other subjects you are interested in!

Do you have an interest in less common subjects such as Psychology or Information Technology? Or perhaps you wish to take on a third language at the high school level? Depending on what you wish to study in university and your future career goals, it may be beneficial to take up subjects that align with your interests. This is beneficial for university admissions as testament to your academic ability as well as your drive to learn new content and continuously strive to go above and beyond the normal expectations of a high school student.
