Test-Blind/Free Colleges 2026/27: The Complete List and How to Apply Without Scores
Where scores don't count, and what carries the weight instead

Summary
Test-blind colleges don't consider SAT or ACT scores at all, even if you send them. For 2026/27 that includes all nine University of California campuses, the Cal State system, Washington State, and a few private colleges including Pitzer, Hampshire and Lewis & Clark. With no score in the file, your GPA, course rigor and essays carry the entire academic case, so put your hours there. AP exam scores stay visible at the UCs as supporting context, though they don't replace the score that's been removed. And if your list also includes test-optional or test-required schools, you still need to test.
What is a test-blind college?
It really is a test-free institution when it comes to the ACT and SAT. That wasn't something that was seen anywhere on the application, nor used in the admission or the scholarship process.

Test blind vs test optional, test required, and test flexible

Test required | Scores are mandatory for review | Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT, Cornell |
Test flexible | A score is required, but alternatives to the SAT/ACT can count | Most Carnegie Mellon colleges (SAT, ACT, AP, IB, A-Levels) |

Test-blind schools don't penalize a weak score, but they don't reward a strong one either. Every hour of SAT prep aimed at a UC campus buys you nothing there. The work goes to your GPA, your course rigor and your essays instead.
Test blind doesn't mean easier
One thing students miss: AP exam scores are still visible
What carries the weight instead
Your transcript, read closely
Your essays
Your activities, in unusual detail
Context, explicitly
It's the best application in the country, because they don't take recommendations, and they no longer take test scores. So it's just who you are as a person. You have to have been busy, engaged, and making a difference.

Who test blind actually suits
Your Profile | What test blind means for you |
Strong GPA, testing underperforms it | A real fit. Move prep hours into PIQs and course rigor |
Learning differences or test anxiety | The format that misrepresents your ability is never part of the admissions decision |
Under-resourced school, limited prep access | Context works for you, and the prep gap stops counting against you |
Community-facing profile over research credentials | This is the profile UC readers respond to |
Strong tester, limited activities | Your best asset is invisible here. Weigh whether the UCs belong on the list |
