What is Northwestern’s acceptance rate?
The 7% rate isn't a measure of whether you're good enough for Northwestern. It's a measure of how many people who are equally good are competing for the same seat.

A majority of the letters I read would fall under what our team calls a neutral positive. It affirmed what we could already tell from the application. Very rarely a teacher would say 'this is a once-in-a-career student, in the top 10 or 20 I've ever taught.'

What does holistic review actually mean at Northwestern?
We would read by region, high school at a time, so you have the full context. You're understanding what courses and expectations are, what students are scoring on average. The big thing is, let's calibrate on the school.

What are admissions officers scanning for when they read your file?
If everything's stacked under one topic, I know nothing about how you'd present in a discussion section on post-Civil War America. Stacking tall is good to an extent, but you know it when you see it: this is too tall of a Jenga tower.

Curiosity and collaboration
The difference between 'I would have access to this' versus the students that would say, 'I'm excited to share this with my peers, I would be excited to learn from others.' Anytime you're already thinking of yourself as a classmate or a community member, that is better.`

Why do strong applicants get rejected from Northwestern?
A 20% early rate and a sub-6% regular rate don't mean applying early triples your odds. The early pool is stronger and more committed before any file is read.
Should you apply early to Northwestern?
If it's your top choice, ED should be the answer. That is your best chance of success by a wide margin. It is not impossible to find success in the RD round, but it is very, very difficult.

There's a big lopsidedness to that, but some of it self-fulfills as a prophecy. The reason there's more success here is because the students have done the work and already have done the matchmaking themselves.
