MIT Admits 4.7% Of Students To The Class of 2027

The results are in, and the competition is more fierce than ever! Of the 26,914 students who applied to the MIT Class of 2027, the university only extended admission offers to 1,259 students. The 4.7% of students who received the good news are muralists and mountaineers, locksmiths and lifeguards, baristas and blacksmiths.


MIT Acceptance Rate And Admission Stats For the Class of 2027

Keeping with tradition, MIT released its 2027 regular admissions results on Pi Day, March 14, at 6:28 pm. MIT’s dedicated team of admissions officers reviewed thousands of applications, taking a holistic approach to each one.

The MIT Class of 2027 statistics were first announced in an MIT Admissions blog post on March 14. The post reported that MIT saw a 20% decrease in Early and Regular action applicants from last year, with 26,914 students applying to the MIT Class of 2027.

Part of the decline could be due to MIT reinstating its requirement to provide SAT/ACT scores for admissions. This is still higher than the 20,075 who applied to MIT for the Class of 2024.

MIT Regular Admissions Results for the Class of 2027

MIT’s class of 2027 faced one of the toughest admission cycles. For the regular decision cycle, 14,990 students applied to MIT of which only 574 students got accepted at an acceptance rate of only 3.8%.

The downward trend in acceptance rate over the years for MIT has made it one of the most competitive non Ivy League schools to get into.

MIT usually aims for a class size of around 1,100 students and put less than 2% of applicants on the waitlist.

The accepted students come from a variety of backgrounds, including all 50 states, 63 countries, and nearly 900 different high schools.

MIT Regular Admissions Results over the Past Four Years

MIT experienced a record number of applications for the Class of 2025 and Class of 2026. Application numbers were well above the pre-pandemic numbers, and both 2025 and 2026 saw 66% more applications than the Class of 2024.

The comparison chart below highlights the sharp increase in applicants over the last four years. Numbers dropped for the Class of 2027 as testing requirements were reinstated.

MIT Early Admissions Results for the Class of 2027

Of the 11,924 applicants, MIT accepted only 685 students, with an early acceptance rate of 5.7%, to the Class of 2027.

The university deferred 7,892 applicants, rejected 2,815 applicants and 532 withdrew before decisions were announced. Based on these acceptance numbers, we recommend you apply early to increase your chances of getting into MIT.
