What GPA do you need to get into Yale?

There isn't a published minimum. Yale does not list a GPA requirement, and its Common Data Set rates Academic GPA as only "Considered", the lowest evaluation tier Yale applies to any factor it weighs in review.
What Yale does report is class rank: 97% of enrolled students sat in the top 10% of their high school class. That describes where competitive applicants tend to land, not a cutoff.
Because Yale withholds the figure, applicants are left without a benchmark. Based on admitted student data from Crimson's own Yale cohort, and triangulated against published GPA data from peer institutions in Yale's tier (Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT), the working benchmark for competitive Yale applicants is approximately 4.17 weighted. Unweighted, that corresponds to a near-perfect 3.95+ across a transcript loaded with the most demanding coursework a student's school offers.
That number is a reference point, not a target. Yale reads transcripts in context. The question its admissions officers are asking when they open a transcript is whether a student pushed as far as the curriculum at their school allowed, whether they took the hardest classes available, and how they performed once they did.

How Does Yale Actually Evaluate Your GPA?

A perfect GPA earned in an undemanding curriculum is a very different thing from a slightly lower one built across the hardest courses a school offers. Yale reads transcripts with that distinction firmly in mind. Area officers know each school on their territory well — its course offerings, its grading norms, and what it actually means to be near the top of a class there. A student from a school that offers linear algebra is expected to have taken linear algebra. A student from a school where precalculus is the ceiling is evaluated against that ceiling, not against a national standard.
Contextual review also extends to life circumstances. Yale's holistic framework explicitly accommodates situations where a student's performance was affected by family illness, caregiving responsibilities, personal health crises, or other serious disruptions. A student who underwent chemotherapy freshman year and carried lower grades that semester is not automatically disqualified. The expectation is that the grades recover when the disruption resolves, and that recovery arc, not the worst semester on the transcript, is what matters.
One further dimension: your academic record should reflect your stated interests, not contradict them. A student who describes research in the life sciences as their defining passion but has avoided biology AP, never pursued independent lab work, and underperformed in science creates a credibility problem that is very hard to resolve in a committee room. The academic record and the personal narrative need to point in the same direction.

If a student attended a school that offered linear algebra as the most rigorous math class, the expectation was that they would take it. Many schools don't teach linear algebra. Maybe if they're lucky, they get to BC Calculus. The holistic review is meant to take all of that in context.

Is Yale Test-Optional or Test-Required?

Yale has a test-flexible policy, which means standardized testing is required… but the format is the student's choice. Students must submit at least one of: SAT, ACT, AP exam scores (minimum score of 3), or IB exam scores (minimum 5 on Higher Level courses). Yale moved to this policy as a more inclusive alternative to full test-optional status, preserving the use of standardized scores as a data point while giving students genuine choice about which format best represents their academic preparation.
71% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores; 27% submitted ACT scores. Some students submitted both. A smaller number used AP or IB scores to satisfy the requirement, which is a pathway particularly relevant for international students whose AP or IB records are stronger than their standardized test performance. Test scores are rated Important by Yale's CDS, one tier below the six factors rated Very Important, and notably the same tier as first-generation status and geographical residence. Testing matters, but it is not the primary differentiator at this level of selectivity.
Where a student has both SAT/ACT scores and strong AP or IB results, submitting both is generally advisable. AP and IB results represent sustained academic work across a year or more of rigorous coursework, which can provide a different and often more meaningful signal than a single exam sitting. A strong AP record can provide context that softens a standardized test score that doesn't fully capture what a student is capable of.

Yale requires standardized testing, but scores are one data point among many – and not the most important one. Sustained credentials like AP and IB results often carry more weight because they reflect months of demanding academic work.

Yale's policy now allows for the submission of an SAT or ACT, or AP scores. Many students will still submit both. If a student has both, I'd still recommend submitting both.

What SAT Score Do You Need for Yale?

There are no explicit score cutoffs at Yale. That's not a disclaimer, it's how the process actually works. Scores are read in context, compared against other applicants from the same school, weighed alongside AP and IB results, and assessed as one piece of a multi-dimensional picture. A score that falls below Yale's published ranges might still be competitive for a student whose broader academic record is exceptionally strong; a perfect score won't compensate for shallow essays or a disconnected application.
The data does show that scores among enrolled students cluster heavily at the top of the range. On the SAT, 89.7% of enrolled students who submitted scores reported EBRW in the 700-800 range, and 88.1% reported Math in the same range. 90% of SAT submitters reported a composite of 1400 or above. The middle 50% SAT composite range is 1470 to 1560. The 25th percentile — the more instructive figure for benchmarking — means that 25% of enrolled students scored below these ranges and were still admitted.

What Courses Does Yale Expect You to Take?

There is no prescribed course list for Yale applicants. Yale’s own admissions materials are explicit: course selection is evaluated relative to what a student’s school actually offers, and no student is penalized for courses their institution doesn’t provide. The question Yale is asking isn’t whether you took the right subjects, but whether you challenged yourself appropriately within the options available to you.

In many countries, the score you receive on your national exam dictates the university you get placed into. That’s not the same at all as US holistic review. Academics are absolutely valued and important, but they’re not the end-all-be-all.

Do Academics Alone Get You Into Yale?

Nope, which is the most important thing to understand about Yale’s process. The GPA distributions, test score ranges, and course recommendations on this page describe the threshold. Most competitive applicants clear it. What Yale wants to know, once the academic bar is met, is a different question altogether: who is this person, and what will they bring to a residential community?
That question doesn’t get answered by a transcript. It’s revealed in essays that show how a student thinks and what they actually care about, extracurriculars that demonstrate whether they act with purpose or simply accumulate credentials, recommendations that confirm their character, and a coherence across the whole application that lets an admissions officer construct a full picture of who this student is. Once the academic threshold is cleared, the qualitative evidence is what separates admits from the qualified pool.

Once you get to a certain level, that’s just table stakes. How did the student distinguish themselves in the ways they wanted to impact the community? Their intellectual curiosity, the ways in which they could bring that to their peers.

What Are the Most Common Academic Mistakes Yale Applicants Make?

Most academic mistakes at Yale’s level come down to optimizing for the wrong things: protecting a GPA at the cost of rigor, submitting the wrong testing format, or building an academic record that contradicts the story told elsewhere in the application.

Over-indexing on GPA at expense of rigor

Yale rates Rigor as Very Important and GPA as only Considered. Choosing easier courses to protect a 4.0 sends exactly the wrong signal. Yale would rather see a B+ in the hardest available course than an A in a safer one.

Claiming academic interests without coursework to support

Applying as a future scientist while avoiding lab sciences, or as an aspiring engineer without advanced math, creates a credibility gap that is very hard to resolve in committee. Your transcript and your narrative need to follow the same thread.

Submitting the wrong testing format

Yale’s test-flexible policy exists for a reason. If your AP or IB scores are stronger than your SAT scores, you can submit those instead. Submitting weak standardized test scores when strong alternative credentials exist is a missed opportunity.

Omitting context for academic disruptions

Yale’s holistic review is built to accommodate adversity, but only if you talk about it! Family illness, caregiving responsibilities, personal health crises… these belong in your additional information section if they affected your academic performance.

Treating senior year grades as optional

Yale’s admissions office can and does rescind offers for significant drops in senior year performance. The application is not the finish line.

Assuming your transcript speaks for itself

If your school’s grading system is unusual or your curriculum isn’t widely known, your counselor recommendation needs to provide that context explicitly. Yale reads transcripts in context, but that context has to be available to read.
The most common academic mistake at Yale’s level isn’t a low GPA. It’s choosing safety over challenge — a choice that contradicts exactly what Yale’s CDS says it values most.
