What GPA do you need to get into UChicago?
You need close to a perfect record. Among UChicago's enrolled first-years, 96% ranked in the top tenth of their high school class and 99% in the top quarter, while about 58% held a 4.0 GPA (CDS 2024-25). UChicago also reports an average GPA of 4.97 on a weighted scale, which reflects honors and AP weighting and runs above 4.0, so read it as context rather than a target you take literally.

UChicago doesn't publish an unweighted GPA average. Based on Crimson's own admit-pool data, competitive applicants at this tier carry roughly a 3.9 or higher unweighted GPA. That's a Crimson estimate offered as a realistic range, not an official UChicago figure. Weighted GPA varies too much from one high school's scale to the next to compare meaningfully, so the unweighted number is the one to plan around.
As Crimson guidance, aim for a 4.0 unweighted and the most rigorous schedule your school allows, rather than treating 3.9 as a safe place to land. With most of the admitted class at or near the top of the scale, anything lower needs the rest of your application to account for it.
Trajectory matters within that bar. UChicago reads transcripts in context, so an upward climb from a weaker start reads more favorably than a flat, unremarkable record. A student who stumbled early and then pulled into top grades in demanding courses makes a more convincing case than one who held steady at a middling level. If your early grades are uneven, the fix is a clear, sustained climb rather than a written explanation.
Is UChicago test-required, test-optional, or test-free?
UChicago is test-optional, and it applies a "No Harm" policy, meaning a score you submit can only ever help your application, never hurt it (UChicago Admissions, current cycle). You decide whether to send the SAT or ACT, and neither is required.
That puts UChicago in a shrinking group. Over the past two years the most selective universities have swung back toward requiring tests: every Ivy League school now mandates the SAT or ACT, and so do Stanford and MIT. UChicago has held its test-optional line while most of its peers reversed theirs, which makes the policy worth understanding rather than taking at face value.
Crimson's recommendation at UChicago is to submit a strong score if you have one. Because No Harm means a good score can only count in your favor, withholding a competitive result leaves value on the table. The bar is high, though. If your score sits at or above UChicago's mid-50% range, send it. If it sits well below, No Harm means you lose nothing by leaving it out, so let the rest of your application carry the academic case.
Two things make a missing score less of a gap at UChicago than applicants fear. The university built its review around the transcript long before test-optional became common, so a rigorous record with strong grades does most of the work a score would. And other academic markers can stand in, a high AP exam result, a strong score on a contest like the AMC, or similar third-party results help corroborate the grades on your transcript.
Send a score at or above UChicago's mid-50% range. Below it, “No Harm” means withholding costs you nothing, and a rigorous transcript carries the academic case on its own.
What SAT or ACT score do you need for UChicago?
If you submit, aim for the top of UChicago's range. Among enrolled first-years who sent scores, the mid-50% landed at 1510 to 1560 on the SAT and 34 to 35 on the ACT, with a median SAT of 1540 (CDS 2024-25). Almost no submitted score fell below a 1400 SAT, so the competitive zone is narrow and high.

Those ranges are the factual mid-50% for enrolled students. As Crimson guidance, aim for the 75th percentile rather than the median: target around 1560 on the SAT or a 35 on the ACT. At a school this selective, a score at the top of the band is the one that clearly helps under No Harm, while a score near the 25th percentile does less for you and may be better left unsubmitted.
On the SAT Math section specifically, submitted scores sit near the ceiling, the mid-50% runs roughly 770 to 800, so quantitative strength matters even if you lean toward the humanities, given the breadth the Core demands.
What courses should you take to get into UChicago?
Take the most demanding courses your school offers, because UChicago judges rigor against what was available to you rather than a fixed national standard. UChicago doesn't require any specific courses for admission. It recommends a broad college-preparatory program, English through all four years, three to four years each of math and lab science, three or more of social science, and two to three of a foreign language, and then asks that you challenge yourself within whatever your school makes possible. A demanding schedule at a school with few advanced options can read as strongly as a packed AP slate at a well-resourced one.
Breadth matters as much as depth here, because the Core will ask for both. Every UChicago undergraduate works across the humanities, the social sciences, the physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and the arts, so readers want to see a student who holds their own in STEM and the humanities alike. A transcript that's excellent in one area and thin in another is a harder fit than one that's consistently strong. Within that breadth, depth in the subjects you care about still counts, take the hardest courses available in your areas of interest and let the transcript point in a coherent direction.
One useful specific: in math, UChicago names data science, statistics, modeling, linear algebra, trigonometry, and calculus all as legitimate advanced paths. There's no single "right" math sequence you're expected to follow, what matters is that you kept pushing into challenging material.
UChicago sets no required course count. It judges rigor against what your school offers, so the strongest schedule available to you matters more than hitting any fixed list.
We liked to see students challenging themselves in rigorous classes and still doing well. An A-minus in an AP-level class was better than an A in the non-AP level, to really generalize.

As exam scores, they mostly affect credit and placement once you enroll, and carry little weight in the admission decision itself.

The exam scores work differently. A strong AP or IB result can corroborate the grades on your transcript, and for a test-optional applicant it can serve as a useful third-party academic marker, but UChicago doesn't treat exam scores as a primary admission lever. Their main job comes after you arrive: UChicago grants credit for scores of 5 on most AP exams and 7 on certain higher-level IB exams, which can place you out of introductory requirements and let you start at the right level.

Read across the rows and the lesson is plain: the score that makes you competitive at UChicago is essentially the score that makes you competitive at any of these schools. There's no meaningfully lower bar to aim for anywhere in this group.
The real difference is strategic. At UChicago you decide whether to submit a score; at Yale, Stanford, and MIT the decision is made for you. And UChicago's position is increasingly unusual. Every Ivy League school has now returned to requiring the SAT or ACT, and so have Stanford and MIT, leaving UChicago among a shrinking set of highly selective schools, alongside peers like Duke and Northwestern, that stay test-optional for the current cycle. If your list mixes test-optional and test-required schools, plan to test as though a score is required, because the schools that mandate it set the bar you'll need to clear regardless.
Are perfect grades enough to get into UChicago?
No. At UChicago, top grades and scores are the baseline rather than the deciding factor.
