Columbia University saw a slight drop in number of early decision applications for class of 2027. The pool represents the third largest in Columbia’s history and a 9% drop from last year’s 6,305 early applicants.
Columbia University reported its Early Admission results for the Class of 2027. Columbia College and the School of Engineering and Applied Science received 5,738 early decision applications for the class of 2027. The university did not reveal how many students were accepted out of the pool.
The pool represents the third largest in Columbia’s history and a 9% drop from last year’s 6,305 early applicants. It also marks the second consecutive year of a decline in early decision applicants since a record-breaking 6,435 applications in 2020. The 2020 and 2021 admissions cycles were both the most selective in Columbia’s history, with 3.9 percent and 3.73 percent acceptance rates respectively.

It was another epic application season for Columbia University. The school received 60,377 applications, nearly matching last year’s historic 60,551 applications. Columbia’s Class of 2026 admission rate of 3.73% was almost identical to last year’s 3.66%.
While the last two years’ numbers remained steady, they were significantly different than the numbers in the 2019-2020 admissions cycle when only 40,083 students applied, and 6.15% were admitted.

Columbia nearly matched its record-breaking Class of 2025 regular admissions application numbers. The university received 54,072 regular decision applications and accepted only 1,603 students. As one of the most competitive schools in the Ivy League, Columbia only admitted 2.96% of students in the regular admissions round.
Admissions experts and Columbia’s office of undergraduate admissions believe the increase in applications over the last two years is likely due to its test-optional policy, which is now extended to 2024.
While the number of applicants to Columbia grew significantly from 2020 to 2021, the application numbers remained steady in 2022, decreasing only slightly from 60,551 to 60,377.
