The University of St Andrews offers a unique combination of ancient and modern, local and global. Founded in 1413, St Andrews the third oldest university in the English-speaking world. The city is quite small; the University accounting for approximately half it’s population, but St Andrews has a distinctly cosmopolitan air due to the presence of students and staff from over 140 countries.

In 1413, when university status could only be conferred by the Pope, the then Bishop of St Andrews sought a blessing from Pope Benedict XIII to establish a national university in his home town.
