How hard is it to get into Northwestern, and why?
The mistake is reading a strong transcript as an edge. At Northwestern it's the entry fee, identical across most of the pool, and the decision starts after it's paid.
What academic thresholds do you need to be considered?
SAT composite mid-50%: | 1510 – 1560 |
ACT composite mid-50%: | 34 – 35 |
What does Northwestern look for in applicants?
Multidimensional
Two or more interests you can link into one clear direction, not a list of skills.
Initiative
Acting on your interests: building, prototyping, solving real problems in your field.
Coherence
A file where transcript, activities, and essays tell one story about the same person.
Authentic voice
Specific, reflective writing only you could have written, in a voice that's recognizably yours.
There is a bit of a lean towards students who are trying to do two things, if not more. If you can provide a very clear narrative of 'these are very separate, but for me, they go together,' that reads very well for Northwestern specifically.

A single brilliant talent reads as incomplete here. Northwestern's “AND” means the question isn't how good you are at one thing, but whether two things add up to one person.
How do you stand out beyond grades at Northwestern?
Write the essay only you could write
Build a few activities with real depth
I always encourage students to show the work of you. It's the difference between 'I want to go to Medill because it's one of the best programs,' versus 'because it offers the chance to practice journalism with the journalism residency.' That shows a level of work and digestion.

Should you apply early to Northwestern?
If it's your top choice, ED should be the answer. That is your best chance of success by a wide margin. It is not impossible to find success in the RD round, but it is very, very difficult.
