A Close Look at Brown's Admission History

Brown University's admission statistics reveal some clear trends, reflecting the dynamic nature of admissions policies and priorities in the context of broader societal trends impacting higher education. Acceptance rates, for instance, have consistently decreased at Brown — and many other top schools — over recent years, indicating the increasingly competitive nature of admissions at the more selective US universities.

Applicants’ test scores, especially for the SAT and ACT, have also risen over time as students have become more focused on preparing for these exams. In the 1980s, for example, the median SAT score for admitted students was around 1200; in recent years, it has been closer to 1460!

In terms of demographic representation, Brown has made significant strides toward greater diversity and inclusivity over the years. For the Class of 2027, for instance, Brown offered admission to students from all 50 U.S. states, plus Washington D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, and invited young international scholars from scores of countries across the globe.

The class of 2027 also includes a greater number of first-generation college students and more applicants from low- and moderate-income families. There are also more students from rural areas, small towns, and more veterans. These trends are a testament to Brown's expanded outreach efforts and commitment to making a top-flight college experience accessible for more students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

For example, Brown instituted the Brown Promise financial aid initiative in 2018-19. This innovation replaced loans with scholarship funds in all University-packaged undergraduate financial aid awards, playing a crucial role in attracting a diverse and talented student body.

Today Brown covers full tuition for families earning $125,000 or less with typical assets, and the university has set a goal of becoming fully need-blind for international students starting with the Class of 2029.
