Caltech does not have a strict minimum GPA requirement for undergraduate admissions. However, admitted students typically have very high GPAs, ranging from 3.98 to 4.2, with an average GPA of 4.19.

Caltech is test-optional currently for the admissions cycle. Caltech's SAT scores for admitted students range from 1530 - 1580, with an average score of 1550.

Although SAT scores are optional, we recommend that students aim for a good SAT score of at least 1550 to be competitive in the admissions process at Caltech University.

ACT Requirements

Caltech is test-optional for the next admissions cycle. Caltech's ACT scores for admitted students range from 34 to 36, with an average score of 36.

A good ACT score will still boost your application above the competition and help get you into your dream school. It will allow admissions officers to quickly and objectively compare you to the rest of the applicant pool.

Other Requirements

Besides academic grades, Caltech applicants must submit required Supplemental Application Essays consisting of required and optional short answer prompts. Caltech applicants also have the option of submitting optional supplemental materials, such as a research paper or publication, a Maker portfolio, an Internship description, etc.


Make sure you have extracurriculars relating to your area of study and those that show your dedication over time. Caltech looks for applicants who demonstrate an intense STEM focus and additional interests in a non-STEM area of study.

Recommendation Letters

Caltech requires two teacher recommendations. One from a math or science teacher and one from a humanities or social science teacher.


Required for most international students.
