Princeton to Require SAT or ACT Scores Starting Fall 2027

After seven years of test-optional admissions, Princeton will once again require SAT or ACT scores beginning with the Class of 2032. The decision follows five years of internal data showing stronger academic outcomes among score submitters, a trend echoed in recent research (see below), aligning Princeton with Harvard, UPenn, and Brown as elite schools move back toward mandatory testing. Yale has gone test flexible and Columbia remains permanently test optional.

At Crimson, students in our latest cohort improved their SAT scores by an average of 152 points through personalized tutoring and strategy. Although, testing alone won’t get your child in — it’s just one part of a holistic review where admissions officers weigh academics, activities, and impact. Building that kind of profile takes planning, guidance, and expert strategy. Crimson students are 6.5x more likely to be accepted to top universities — including 28.3% admitted to Princeton’s Class of 2029, versus 4.4% overall, and 29 Crimson admits this year.
