International Coffee Day: The Best Cafes at Harvard, Oxford, Berkeley, and More!

The culture surrounding coffee has become increasingly more widespread, attracting hipsters, photographers and college students all over the world with its caffeinated aroma and the ambient surroundings of a plant-filled cafe.

To celebrate International Coffee Day on October 1st, we’ve compiled a list of the best coffee shops across university campuses in the US & UK. If you’re looking for the tastiest cup of coffee or a comfy nook to study in, then look no further.

Caffe Strada near University of California, Berkeley

Known to be the first cafe to invent the white hot chocolate, Caffe Strada is a small, quaint cafe situated near the bright and sunny Berkeley campus. With ample seating inside the cafe as well as outdoors on the patio, Strada is the perfect spot to camp out and study before a big exam. Open early until late, also makes it a good option for a quick catch-up or first date. Also- the cafe is dog friendly!

The Java House near the University of Iowa

For over 20 years, The Java House has been Iowa City’s ‘premier coffee provider’. Located in the Iowa Memorial Union building, the shop sells deliciously brewed coffee as well as breakfast sandwiches, pastries and cookies for students looking to grab a quick bite on their way to early morning classes.

Davenport Coffee Lounge near American University

The Davenport Coffee Lounge is a non-profit coffee shop located in the university’s SIS building and is fully staffed by American University students. The lounge offers a variety of events and programs for university staff and students including Open Mic nights, Free Shot (of espresso) Day, latte art competitions, and more!

Common Grounds near Baylor University

Since 1994, Common Grounds has been serving up coffee to Baylor students across two store locations in Waco, Texas. The cafe has since evolved to a catering company and venue hire space. The venue hosts weekly shows, Thursday-Saturday giving local artists and bands the opportunity to perform and tickets ranging from free - $40, depending on the act.

Pavement Coffee House near Boston University

Boston’s local coffee shop, Pavement Coffee House serves up coffee and freshly baked bagels daily to Boston University and Boston College students. Rooted in Cambridge for over 25 years, Darwin’s 4 locations across campus are locally-owned and all authentic in their own special way, serving award-winning sandwiches and freshly brewed coffees in a homegrown atmosphere. Housing Works Bookstore Cafe & Bar near NYU and Columbia

For over a decade, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe & Bar has established itself as a New York downtown destination. All of their stock is donated and the shop is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, with 100% of the profits donated to Housing Works’ lifesaving services. There are free and low-cost events almost every night of the week as well as an exceptional collection of books, movies and music.
