How hard is it to get into UC Berkeley?
UC Berkeley is one of the hardest public universities in the United States to get into, and harder still if you're a nonresident or applying to an impacted major. For fall 2025, Berkeley admitted 11.4% of 126,864 first-year applicants, or 14,524 students.
Demand has surged: Berkeley drew about 88,000 first-year applications for fall 2020 and more than 126,000 for fall 2025, a jump of over 40% in five years, while the entering class stayed close to flat. The same number of seats now gets divided among far more applicants each cycle.
What makes Berkeley hard isn't only the number. It's the way those applications get read. With a pool this size, most files never reach a traditional admissions committee. Each one is read at least twice, sometimes a third time when two readers disagree, by a large team of trained readers who turn the qualitative parts of your application into ratings the office uses to build a diverse class. Do you need perfect grades to get into UC Berkeley?
Yes and no. You need grades at the top of your school's range, but a perfect GPA on its own won't get you in. Among enrolled first-years, the average GPA is 3.9, and about 90% had a 3.75 or higher. Who thrives at UC Berkeley, and who struggles
The students who do well here arrive ready to advocate for themselves, find their own opportunities, and hold their own somewhere far more competitive than most high schools. Readers look for that same independence in the application, because the campus runs on it.
The harder question is one most applicants never ask: whether a school this size is the right fit at all. A student who has spent their whole life in a small, closely held environment, where they were always near the top, often underestimates the shift to a campus where everyone arriving was near the top of theirs. That adjustment is real, and for some students a smaller top-tier school, of which there are many, would have served them better. Why strong applicants still get rejected from UC Berkeley
Plenty of students with top grades get turned away, usually for reasons they could have avoided. Three patterns come up again and again:
Blending in
The most common rejection is the applicant who met every standard at a strong school but never rose above it. If your file looks like everyone else's from your school, your city, or your country, there's little for a reader to argue for. Clearing your school's bar isn't the same as going past it. If everyone takes four advanced courses, the student who gets noticed takes five.
The impacted-major mismatch
Berkeley's most competitive majors, among them computer science, engineering, and business, are read more strictly and against the major from the start. Applying to an unrelated major hoping to switch in later is transparent to readers and rarely works, because moving into these majors after you arrive is very difficult.
Banking on a test score
Berkeley is test-free, so SAT and ACT scores aren't used anywhere in the review, including for scholarships. A strong score paired with thin essays and a short activities list is a poor fit here, and no amount of testing makes up for it.

What does it cost, and is Berkeley the right fit?
Cost belongs in the decision for many families, and Berkeley's math turns heavily on residency. For 2025-26, California residents pay $14,202 in tuition plus about $4,264 in required fees. Nonresident tuition runs to $53,472, since out-of-state and international students pay around $39,000 in supplemental tuition on top of the base rate. On-campus food and housing adds roughly $25,962, and the Bay Area is an expensive place to live.
The harder truth is aid. Berkeley gives very limited financial support to students from outside California, so a nonresident who needs real funding should line up an outside source before counting on a place here. Applying and planning to figure it out later is a real risk, because the university is unlikely to close the gap for you.
What you're paying into is unusual. Berkeley is the rare public university that competes with Stanford, MIT, and Harvard on research, at public scale and on a public mission. Most institutions at its research level are private and small; most public universities its size aren't in that tier. For an undergraduate it means world-class labs and faculty inside a large public system rather than behind a private gate.
Then there's fit. A campus of about 33,000 suits students who arrive ready to seek things out for themselves. If you've only known small, closely held settings, that shift is worth weighing honestly before you commit.
