Friends in French - A Crimson Student Initiative

Flora is in her fourth year of high school and from England. She has created a capstone project called ‘Friends in French’.

Friends in French is a website that offers free online learning material for teachers of and young students learning French. Flora designs and creates all of the material herself, before uploading it onto her website (www.friendsinfrench.co.uk). The resources are free to all learners and available to access or download whenever you need to! Some of her resources include vocabulary sheets, match-up cards, and more. Some examples of her resources are pictured below.                    P 4 Sq D Pp Inu 2 Q Y 6 TL 3 R XB Eq K 4 Z V Ld 8 G 2 Xy QTDCN Is M A VUO Fy K Oe Ql Og 3 HH Yube Vj WJNSMVR 1 F NK 98 F L 0 U 9 Effrw 02 I Ij Pmx Vp F Kj VTC Hp O Yve 9 O 7 F GZ Oy PGQ                  J Y Sq Mi 4 K Pif Hm 8 O Eh Nab GOO Xo 0 H Kag Rw I Fv F 2 Da Og U 4 Y 6 Uo G Olam FUQ Wmic Cvi 8 B 7 RLN Ld Z 4 F Yd 9 Uq Ko EEY 8 AW Z 31 C Gl H Si E I O Xcx Ybe 4 W 761 Sq 0 L Dsd XXHAFlora's project was inspired by the message she has kept with her through her site's journey: “I want to show that learning French and foreign languages is very important for all children in today's multicultural world and due to the fact that French isn’t a core subject and maybe overlooked, I would like to help encourage this and provide material that enables French to be taught easily”.

Whilst her project wasn’t initially intended to be a website, Flora’s project has been adapted to the current global climate and has moved online due to Covid-19 - certainly one of her biggest obstacles in the creation of Friends in French. She has recognized the growing need for online material during the pandemic as everyone’s learning has become increasingly virtual and hopes that Friends in French will be an easy way for teachers to quickly download online material for lessons. Flora realized that it was hard for teachers, parents, and learners to spend their time that was already saturated with work, finding teaching materials and believes her project simply solves this solution by providing accessible learning material at no cost!”

One of the teachers who use Flora’s website has described her material as “super accessible” and wanted to highlight that she found them really helpful when she was looking for fun and simple learning sheets for her students.

Finally, Flora believes that being handmade, her resources are unique and one of a kind!

Flora has received a lot of help along the way from her Crimson team, specifically her ECL mentor who has really helped push and come up with lots of new ideas and given invaluable advice and support to help Flora get her capstone to where it is now.

Outside of building Friends in French, Flora is engaged in many other extra-curricular activities. She is the global connections pupil leader at her senior school in which she leads assemblies and runs the Model United Nations Society. Through this role, she aims to spread cultural awareness of global issues throughout her school community and works with other pupils to create strong partnership links with other schools around the world.

Flora also engages in many sports inside and outside of school. She is on the school’s 1st tennis team as well as representing her club’s ladies’ team in many local matches.

In Fall 2022, Flora aims to attend college in the US, and whilst far away from home, she is excited about the new opportunity and hopes that her capstone project and many other activities will help her get there.

Moving forward with Friends in French, Flora hopes to grow the platform further, and also hopes to bring more people that could help to continue growing the website with her when she goes to college. She is looking for anyone who has an interest in design/art as well as basic French knowledge, who might be interested in getting involved!

Flora would love it if you could visit her website at www.friendsinfrench.co.uk and explore all of her material. Please also spread the word to anyone who might benefit from this website! She is always looking for new volunteers to join the Friends in French team so if you would be interested, feel free to email her at flingafelter02@gmail.com.
