Everything You Need to Know About US College Rankings

Ever wondered how useful they are and which ones you can trust? We've got you covered.

The benefits of rankings

College rankings are comparative tools that allow you to see lots of information about US universities in one place.

Compiled annually, rankings are calculated using various measures of quality, such as academic reputation, cost, acceptance rate, class size and staff to student ratio.

When reviewed in combination, all this data can provide a sense of what each college is like and how it’s regarded by academics and employers.

You should not, however, make decisions based on the rankings alone.

The best-known ones

Ever wondered why universities fare differently across the top rankings? It's all down to what they measure, and how.

The problem with rankings

Whilst college rankings are a good place to kickstart your research, they do not present a rounded picture of each university because a host of factors, such as social life, athletics, community engagement and innovation, are not measured.

In order to determine which college will be the best fit for you, you need to look beyond the rankings.

This is what Crimson is here to help you with. Megan Summers is one of our many experienced Strategists, and when working with students, her advice is to “think about the areas that interest you most at a school when looking into university options. What makes that department stand out compared to other universities and what opportunities do they offer that are unique to them?”.
