If you play your sport at a national level you can use it to help you gain acceptance to a top US university.
If a university coach wants you for their team, it will dramatically improve your chances of acceptance.
But the journey is not easy. There may be anywhere from 2 to 10 spots available (depending on the sport) at each university every year and coaches are fielding anything between 200-500 applications. There is also a lot to prepare, you need to produce a recruitment video showcasing your talent, prepare persuasive appeals to coaches and negotiate and navigate the scholarship system.
Even after all of that, if you are successful, you still have to hit the university's academic requirements to cement your place.
Scholarship amounts vary per university and there are no scholarships available at Ivy League universities.

Within the NCAA, there are 1200 member schools and 23 sanctioned sports. It's made up of three divisions as detailed below. Ivy League universities are in the NCAA Division I although they cannot give out athletic scholarships.
This division has the largest athletics budget and the most scholarships available. This however makes these schools very competitive. Division I colleges include; Stanford, Duke, UCLA and Georgia Tech.
This division has fewer scholarships available but the academic requirements are lower. Division II colleges include; California State, UC San Diego and Tiffin University.
This division doesn't have any scholarships available and less leverage in the admissions process. Division III colleges include; Amherst, Williams, Johns Hopkins and UChicago.
