Asking yourself “why do you want to be a doctor” isn’t important only for the interview. Knowing what drives you will be important for those inevitably stressful times during medical school. If you are able to remember that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel, it will allow you to maintain perspective. Write down what you’re looking forward to as a doctor, to look at when you feel overwhelmed.
Regular exercise is important for your body and mind. It’s a great stress relief, good for your health and helps you keep your mind fresh. Med school is a great time to experiment with different exercise regimens. Plus this will be a great habit to carry in your future clinical practice. It’s not always helpful to be staring at your books 24/7 - be aware of when you’re not doing good study.
Don’t waste every second of your life in the library studying. One key technique is learning what to study, and what techniques work best for you. Maybe you’re a visual learner, an auditory learner, kinaesthetic - this is the time to work that out. Remember that the same study technique doesn’t work for everyone, so don’t worry what other people are doing if you’ve found something that works for you!
No man is an island - certainly not in med school. There are plenty of social opportunities in med school, so be sure to find some people who you connect with. They’ll inevitably have different experiences to you, and different strengths. Let that work to everyone’s advantage and form a study group - keep each other accountable and help each other during hard times. The competition is over once you get in, so there’s no need to worry.
There is a ton of competition going into medical school and once you get in it’s hard to shake that feeling. You got in, you’re doing great. Don’t torture yourself with feelings of being an imposter, because it won’t help you continue to succeed. Remember that you don’t have to beat everyone else in your class, you just have to compete with yourself.
