The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies is one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world, founded in 1823 by William Dick and is world-renowned for its efforts in research, led by The Roslin Institute, which is incorporated with the school. The Institute is famous for the cloning of Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. This was a major scientific achievement as it demonstrated that the DNA from adult cells, can be used to create an entirely new organism.

The school provides outstanding veterinary education at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, offering 4 and 5 year tracks for a Veterinary Medicine degree. The Department operates small animal and equine hospitals and equine and farm animal clinical services in order to provide clinical teaching material, as well as using the state of the art 200 cow university dairy herd and sheep flock at nearby Madingley.

Research within the Department is broadly spread across 3 research themes: Infection & Immunity, Disease Dynamics and Systems Pathology. The schools also works closely with The Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, whose aims are to provide a comprehensive clinical service across a range of species and disciplines for clients, undergraduate and postgraduate students and the veterinary profession in general.

The RVC is the only veterinary school in the world to hold the highest accreditation from the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), EAVE (European Association of Establishments of Veterinary Education), RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons), AVBC (Australian Veterinary Boards Council Inc.) and the Royal Society of Biology.
