Yale Reaches Record Number of Applicants for Class of 2023

Yale University has released statistics for their 2018-2019 application round for the Class of 2023.
For the fifth year in a row the New Haven, Connecticut based Ivy League university has received a record number of applications with 36,829 students seeking admission compared to 35,305 for the Class of 2022.
This marks a 4.3% increase in applications received - and paves the way for another reduction in admission rates which are expected to fall below 5% for the first time in the university’s history.
In the Fall of 2017, Yale opened two new residential colleges - the Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray colleges - which allowed the university to add 200 more undergraduate student places per year, taking their annual admission number from 1350 to 1550.

According Yale University Director of Outreach and Communications, Mark Dunn, as reported in the the Yale Daily News, the addition of the two new colleges has provided a further inspiration for students to apply:
““I am pleased that the number of students applying to Yale has increased again, and that many of the largest increases have come from populations that have been historically underrepresented at selective universities like Yale. The opening of Pauli Murray and Benjamin Franklin colleges have allowed us to admit and enrol more students which has, I believe, inspired more prospective students to apply.””
According to further reporting in the New Haven Register, the number of applicants from racial or ethnic minority groups has grown 51 percent while international applicants have increased at about the same rate as U.S. applicants.
The University has already offered 794 students places in their Class of 2023 in their Early round of admissions which also represented a record in applications received (6,020 compared to 5,733 for the Class of 2022.)
