Yale’s Early Action acceptance rate for the class of 2028 decreased a notch compared to last year’s early round, which saw 776 acceptances from 7,744 early applicants (10% acceptance rate). The overall acceptance rate for the Class of 2027 stood at 4.35%, providing more evidence of recent trends in which most top-ranking institutions are reporting increased numbers of applicants and some of the most competitive admissions rates ever.

Yale’s Acceptance Results for the Class of 2028

Class of 2028 Early Action Acceptance Rate

Yale University has announced a remarkably selective early action acceptance rate of 9.02% for the Class of 2028, the lowest in over two decades. Of the 7,856 early applicants, only 709 were offered admission to Yale, underscoring the university's stringent standards of academic excellence. This year's admission process was highly competitive, so we can expect that the young scholars gaining admission exemplified not just academic prowess but also a unique blend of talents, motivations, and backgrounds, and the potential to make outstanding contributions to the Yale community.

Compared to the previous year, there was a slight increase in the number of early applications, rising from 7,744 to 7,856. In light of this increase, it’s no surprise to see the acceptance rate dropping, but the drop from 10% to 9.02%, is perhaps steeper than expected, signaling a more competitive admissions landscape. The proportion of applicants denied admission reached a notable 70%, the highest rate in recent years.

Concurrently, 20% of applicants were deferred to the regular decision pool, and 1% either withdrew their applications or submitted incomplete ones. This shift in figures reveals heightened selectivity and competition in Yale University's admissions process for the Class of 2028.

Also significant for the Class of 2028 is the role of the 2023 Supreme Court decision prohibiting recourse to race-based selection criteria during the admissions evaluation and decision-making process. The new legal landscape has many top schools looking for new ways to promote campus diversity and ensure academic opportunities for diverse scholars. With this in mind perhaps, Yale has also integrated new data tools, such as the Opportunity Atlas, to better assess applicants from diverse backgrounds, contributing to increased enrollment from lower-income applicants.

Despite shifting legal and social perspectives, Yale's commitment to a holistic approach to admissions, and to diversity and inclusion, remains evident. Yale continues to foster relationships with college access organizations and increase student-focused outreach efforts. Additionally, Yale's approach to admissions now emphasizes making more definitive decisions during the early action round, reflecting both the growing number of applications and feedback from high school counselors.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Yale adopted a test-optional policy, which is currently under review for future application cycles. This policy, along with other adaptations in the admissions process, highlights Yale's dedication to evolving with the educational landscape but could also be a factor that contributes to the rising number of applicants.

Overall, Yale's Class of 2028 admissions results, marked by a historically low acceptance rate and strategic changes, showcase the university's enduring commitment to selecting a diverse, talented, and dynamic cohort of first-year students.

Class of 2028 Regular Decision Acceptance Rate

Following the Ivy League tradition, Yale University is poised to announce its Regular Decision results on the eagerly awaited Ivy Day, which is typically around April 1, 2024. This day is crucial for countless applicants — the time when all Ivy League schools simultaneously unveil their admission decisions, marking a pivotal moment in the college journeys of many hopeful, motivated, and deserving young scholars.

Aspirants still looking to secure a place in Yale’s incoming class must submit their applications by the deadline of January 2, 2024. This cutoff provides the final chance for students to polish and submit their applications, highlighting their accomplishments, experiences, and the unique ways they can contribute to Yale’s vibrant and diverse community.

The buildup to Ivy Day represents more than just eager anticipation. As the culmination of years of dedication and dreams for numerous students, it’s a day that involves transformative choices for many, and one likely to have a significant impact on students’ futures.

Student Profile for Yale’s Class of 2027

The admitted cohort overall includes students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four United States territories and 78 countries. The admissions office withholds detailed statistics about the demographics of the applicant pool as well as the group of admitted students each year, but told the News it would release a profile of matriculates in August.

“The strength and diversity of the applicant pool is much more important than the number of applications we receive,” said Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremiah Quinlan in the announcement. “I am pleased that Yale College continues to appeal to promising students from a wide range of backgrounds. I am also proud that the admissions office has been able to continue its thoughtful whole-person review process of each applicant, even as the volume of applications has increased.”

Class of 2027 Regular Decision Acceptance Rate

The number of applicants is up by nearly 50% compared to the pool of students that sought entry to the class of 2024. The 4.35% acceptance rate for the class for 2027 is the lowest in recent history, down from 4.46% for the class of 2026, 4.62 for the class of 2025, 6.54% for the class of 2024, and 5.91 for the class of 2023.

The record number of applications means that competition is intense to get into Yale. Yale data also reflect nationwide trends, especially at Ivy League and other highly selective schools. The fact that more schools have adopted test-optional admissions policies in recent years may contribute to current trends, just as many students are also choosing to apply to more schools than ever before.

A Closer Look at Yale’s Admission History

Yale University is one of the most prestigious and selective universities in the United States. Its admissions process is highly competitive, with thousands of qualified applicants vying for a limited number of spots each year.

Here's a closer look at the history of Yale's admissions:

  1. Early Admissions: Yale was one of the first universities to introduce early admissions, a program that allows students to apply early and receive an admissions decision before the regular admissions cycle. This program was introduced in the 1950s and has since become popular among many colleges and universities in the United States.
  2. Application Numbers: Over the years, Yale has seen a significant increase in the number of applications it receives. In 2023, the university has received over 52,250 applications, a record high for the institution. This represents a significant increase from the 13,000 applications received in 1981.
  3. Selectivity: As the number of applications has increased, Yale has become increasingly selective. In 2023, the university has admitted just 4.35% of applicants, making it one of the most selective universities in the country. This represents a significant decrease from the 19.7% admission rate in 1981.
  4. Diversity: Yale has made significant strides in increasing the diversity of its student body. In recent years, the university has placed a greater emphasis on recruiting students from underrepresented groups, and as a result, the student body has become more diverse. In 2021, 53% of the admitted class self-identified as students of color.
  5. Holistic Admissions: Yale has a holistic admissions process, which means that the university considers a range of factors beyond just academic achievement. The admissions committee takes into account a student's extracurricular activities, leadership experience, essays, and recommendations, among other factors. This approach allows the university to evaluate applicants based on their individual strengths and accomplishments, rather than just their academic performance.

Overall, Yale's admissions process has become increasingly competitive and selective over the years, but the university remains committed to building a diverse and talented student body through a holistic approach.
