Changes in Ranking Methodology

Following a severe criticism of its methodologies, US News has focused its results on changes that education can bring. Keeping that in mind here are the changes to this year’s ranking system:

  • U.S. News lowered its weights on reputation factors to equal 25% across several rankings. With outcome measures outweighing reputation, schools are able to demonstrate their value by having strong outcome performance.
  • For the first time, U.S. News published five new master’s degree-level rankings in the following public health specialties: biostatistics, environmental health sciences, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences, as well as an inaugural ranking in the Ph.D. physics specialty called physics of living systems.
  • U.S. News once again published new rankings for master’s programs in health care management, physician assistant, rehabilitation counseling and veterinary medicine.
  • U.S. News issued new rankings of graduate programs in other popular academic disciplines. These include chemistry, computer science, physics and public affairs.

Medical and Law School Rankings

The US News rankings for Best Medical and Law Schools have been delayed indefinitely. The publisher released a preview of its rankings although there was a boycott from top schools. However, there was a lot of feedback to the initial lists. "The level of interest in our rankings, including from those schools that declined to participate in our survey, has been beyond anything we have experienced in the past." While the rest of the rankings have been released, the Medical and Law School Lists are delayed indefinitely.
