Founded in 1865, Cornell University is a private Ivy League university with a mission to “discover, preserve, and disseminate knowledge”. The main campus is on East Hill in Ithaca, New York, overlooking the city and Cayuga Lake. It spreads over 2,300 acres and comprises laboratories, administrative buildings, and almost all the campus' academic buildings, athletic facilities, auditoriums, and museums.

Cornell was founded in 1865 by a New York State Senate bill that named the university as the state's land grant institution. Senator Ezra Cornell offered his Ithaca farm as a site for the university.
