Dartmouth College has set a new benchmark in its admissions history with the Class of 2028. Dartmouth announced that it received a record 3,550 Early Decision applications. This is an increase of 18% over last year, reflecting Dartmouth's strong standing as a top prospect for many students and families. Not surprisingly this large applicant pool increased competition. Of 3,550 ED applicants, 606 students were granted admission, resulting in a historically low Early Decision acceptance rate of 17% at Dartmouth, a notable decrease from the previous year's 19%.
Lee Coffin, Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, praised the quality of this year's applicants, calling it “the best ED pool I have seen in my eight years at Dartmouth.” This sentiment highlights the competitiveness and caliber of students drawn to Dartmouth.
Academically, these students are exceptional, with 97% ranking in the top 10% of their high school class, and a significant number currently holding the first or second rank in their class. Despite Dartmouth’s test-optional policy, 75% of admitted students submitted standardized test scores, with the middle 50% scoring between 1480 and 1560 on the SAT.
Over 20% of the accepted students will be first-generation college students. This figure, a record high for Dartmouth, highlights a commitment to maintaining socio-economic diversity. Additionally, more than half of those admitted will qualify for need-based scholarships, including 22% receiving financial aid packages requiring no parental contribution.
However, in the wake of the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits race consideration in admissions, Dartmouth is excluding race and ethnicity data during the selection process but adheres to its long-standing holistic review process, one established in 1921.
Dartmouth anticipates enrolling an entering class of approximately 1,200 students in September. The Early Decision results for the Class of 2028, marked by a larger applicant pool and greater competition, highlight the dynamic nature of the admissions landscape at Dartmouth as school leaders seek to assemble a diverse and talented cohort of young scholars for its Class of 2028.
