At Oxford and Cambridge, the class of 2024 saw 14% more “incredibly talented” applicants - but they didn’t increase the number of places available.
UK universities received about 10,000 more applicants than normal, with applications from Hong Kong increasing by close to 15%.
As a result, the offer rates at these incredibly competitive universities plummeted.
These shocking changes caused by the COVID pandemic aren’t well-reported.
So what happened, and exactly how will it affect you (applying in the future)? How will top UK universities adapt to the recent challenges and how can Hong Kong students act strategically?
Hannah Rowberry graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Natural Sciences. She then went to work for the University of Oxford, and in the years that followed worked in three different Oxford colleges.
Having worked as an admission officer, she has valuable insight into what makes a successful applicant, and how universities make admissions decisions. She also has a breadth of experience to draw upon about college community and academic life at both Oxford and Cambridge, and other universities across the UK.
