What is the Columbia dual BA program?

The Columbia dual BA is a four-year undergraduate pathway split across two continents. You complete your first two years at a partner university in Europe, either Sciences Po in France or Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, then move to New York for years three and four at Columbia's School of General Studies. At graduation you hold two bachelor's degrees, one from each institution, earned in the same four years a typical student spends on one.
Your Columbia years are full Columbia. You complete an approved major, fulfill the Core Curriculum, and graduate alongside every other Columbia undergraduate. The School of General Studies is Columbia's undergraduate college for students on nontraditional paths, and it administers admissions and enrollment for both dual BA programs. Columbia describes movement as the one experience every dual BA student shares: between campuses, between academic systems, and between continents, with structured support on both sides of the transition.

The Sciences Po route is the broader of the two. Each campus is organized around a region of the world: Le Havre covers the Asia-Pacific, Menton covers the Middle East and the Mediterranean, Reims offers minors in North America or Africa, and Poitiers covers Latin America and the Caribbean.
You study politics, economics, history, sociology, and law through that regional lens, with language instruction to match. French is optional at the point of application for Le Havre, Menton, and Reims, but you commit to reaching B2 proficiency during your two years in France.
The Trinity route is subject-driven from the start. You apply to a specific course, spend two years in depth in that discipline in Dublin, and then continue into a corresponding approved major at Columbia.
If you already know you want four years of History or Neuroscience rather than a broad social science foundation, Trinity is the closer fit.

Is the dual BA easier to get into than Columbia?

No. The dual BA is a different admissions process, evaluated on different criteria, and it is selective in its own right. Columbia admitted 4.94% of applicants to the Class of 2029, and the dual BA programs do not publish annual acceptance rates, so treat any specific figure you see online with caution.
What actually changes is the lens. A joint committee with admissions representatives from Columbia and the partner university reviews your academic history, recommendations, essay, interview, and test scores if you submit them.
Beyond the standard credentials, the committee reads for evidence that you can succeed in two academic cultures: a European system that expects independence early, and an American liberal arts core. High grades and generic Ivy League ambition do not answer that question. A specific, credible case for why you want two years in Reims or Dublin before New York does.

You cannot apply to both dual BA programs in the same cycle, and you cannot apply to a dual BA and Columbia's other undergraduate programs at the same time. Choose one pathway and build the strongest possible case for it.

The dual BA rewards a different applicant profile, not a lower bar. The strongest candidates can explain why a transatlantic education genuinely fits their interests, their adaptability, and their long-term goals.

How the dual BA application works

Both programs run on one shared admissions calendar, administered through Columbia's School of General Studies. There is no Early Decision or Early Action round, and the application sits outside the Common App.

Timeline

August 1: Application opens.
January 2: Application deadline for fall enrollment.
Mid-February: Interview decisions released; financial aid application deadline.
February to mid-March: Interviews with representatives from both institutions.
April 1: Admissions decisions released.
May 1: Acceptance reply and deposit deadline.
Your file needs transcripts covering the previous three years of secondary school plus current-year grades where available, two letters of recommendation, one admissions essay, and an $80 application fee. Interviews are conducted in English, or in English and French if you apply to the Latin America and Caribbean minor in Poitiers.
Testing is optional for most applicants: the Trinity program is test-optional for Anglophone first-year applicants, and the Sciences Po program reviews scores if you submit them. If you are an EU, EEA, Swiss, or UK applicant to the Trinity pathway, you also need an offer from your chosen Trinity course through Ireland's Central Applications Office (CAO), so you are running two applications in parallel.
Mid-year grades can be submitted after the January 2 deadline and strengthen most files, particularly if your first-semester results show an upward trend.

Who the dual BA actually suits

The committee is asking one question underneath everything else: will this specific student thrive in this specific structure? You answer it by showing three things.

A concrete reason to start in Europe

A regional focus you can name at Sciences Po, or a subject you want two years of depth in at Trinity. "I want an Ivy League degree" is a reason to apply to Columbia directly; it is a weak reason to apply here.

Evidence you handle transitions well

Prior moves, language learning, time living independently, or anything else that shows the year-three relocation to New York will energize you rather than derail you.

Long-term goals the structure serves

Careers in international law, diplomacy, global business, or research across academic systems all make a four-year, two-continent education legible to the committee.
If those three things describe you, the dual BA can be a genuine advantage rather than a workaround: you graduate with two degrees, two alumni networks, and a documented record of succeeding in two systems, in the same four years your classmates spend earning one degree.

Europe is not a detour from the Ivy League pathway. For the right student, it is the first stage of it.
