Keeping with tradition, MIT released its 2026 regular admissions results on Pi Day, March 14, at 6:28 pm. MIT’s dedicated team of admissions officers reviewed thousands of applications, taking a holistic approach to each one. The MIT Class of 2026 statistics were first announced in an MIT Admissions blog post on March 14. The post reported that MIT saw a 2% increase in Early and Regular action applicants from last year, with a record high of 33,796 students applying to the MIT Class of 2026. The previous two years’ numbers were well above the average 20,000 applicants before the pandemic.
|Number of Applications||Accepted Students||Acceptance Rate|
MIT’s class of 2026 faced one of the toughest admission cycles. 33,796 students applied to MIT of which only 1,337 students got accepted at an acceptance rate of only 3.9%. The downward trend in acceptance rate over the years for MIT has made it one of the most competitive non Ivy League schools to get into.
MIT reported their Early Admission results in December 2021. Of the 14,781 applicants, MIT accepted only 697 students, with an early acceptance rate of 4.7%, to the Class of 2026. Based on these acceptance numbers, we recommend you apply early to increase your chances of getting into MIT.
MIT experienced a record number of applications for the Class of 2025 and Class of 2026. Application numbers were well above the pre-pandemic numbers, and both 2025 and 2026 saw 66+% more applications than the Class of 2024. The comparison chart below highlights the sharp increase in applicants over the last three years.
|Class of 2024||Class of 2025||Class of 2026|
|Total First-Year Applicants||20,075||33,240||33,796|
|Overall Admission Rate||7.3%||4.1%||3.9%|

MIT is one of the first top US universities to release their regular round results in what looks to be another competitive admissions cycle. Most college admissions experts believe the high application numbers over the last two years are largely due to COVID restrictions and many schools going test-optional. Many colleges are extending their standardized testing policies for another year, so next year’s application numbers could set another record.
Crimson Education helps thousands of students gain admission to their dream schools. Despite enormous applicant pools and low acceptance rates at top universities, Crimson’s acceptance numbers are going up! This year, more than 200 of our students were accepted to top universities in the US in the early round alone. Here is a breakdown of Crimson’s early-round numbers.
As we watch the rest of the Regular Decision acceptances roll in, we’re confident that our students will have another successful year.
