Staying Sane During Med School Applications

APR 01, 2020 • 4 min read

Applying to med school is not for the faint of heart.

UCAT, GAMSAT, MMI, ATAR, GPA --too many acronyms to keep track of, and definitely not enough time! Here are our top tips to staying sane during med school applications.

Make a Plan

The best way to succeed is to know what you’re doing - look into which schools you’re interested in applying to, and see what the requirements are for each individual school. Write down the important dates (i.e UCAT test dates, application cutoffs, interview dates). Sometimes seeing those dates laid out on paper is a good way to see how much/how little time you have to prepare.

Know Yourself

Sit down and take an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Take a practice UCAT/GAMSAT, and see how you stack up before you start your dedicated study. Have a mock interview with your friends/family and get their feedback on how they think you performed. Take a look at your high school grades if you’re applying direct entry, or your first year grades if you’re applying in New Zealand. What ways can you improve your application? Students often fall into the trap of practicing the things they’re already good at. It’s understandable - you like to succeed and feel smart, but if you focus on the areas with plenty of room for improvement, you will be able to make a real difference.

Take Breaks

Don’t work yourself to the bone - it’s important to study smarter and not just harder. Pulling all nighters might be more time studying, but if it’s not meaningful study, it doesn’t matter. Plan breaks for yourself - and come back to your studies reinvigorated. If you have a limited amount of time - devote your time to the most high yield subjects (your core papers), or the subject you’re struggling with.

Phone a Friend

You don’t have to get through this process alone - and in fact, we don’t suggest it! If you have friends that are applying to medicine as well, form a study group! Work together so that you can all get into a medical school program. Or find a mentor who can help you make a plan and stick to it!

At MedView we design a personalised plan based on your goals and strengths to help you be your very best.
