Harvard and Yale Model UN - Day 5: New York City
18/01/2017: Our final day in New York City began with a visit to Wall Street, the world’s epicentre of finance and banking, where we indulged in a typical fasted-paced, on-the-go, Manhattan breakfast. Once all fuelled up with some food we visited the Wall Street Charging Bull. It is said in New York folklore that if you are to rub the Charging Bull’s bronze nose, horns and other parts (use your imagination) you will receive good luck!
After rubbing the bull, we ventured further Downtown to visit the 9/11 memorial, known as Ground Zero. The memorial is located where the twin towers once stood, now, in their footprints, two water features flow deep into the Manhattan ground. The natural sound of the flowing water envelopes the area, drowning out the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city, providing visitors with a sanctuary in which to reflect on the tragedy of 9/11 and the many lives affected.
The most moving aspect of the memorial were the names of every 9/11 victim inscribed in bronze paneling that edged each waterfall. Names with floral tributes or love notes laying next to them were particularly moving, leaving a profound impact on our tour group.
After visiting these two New York must see’s, we split into our own groups to explore New York City for one last time. Some chose to go shopping in Soho, others visited cultural landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, and some headed to the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each group returned to our hotel in the afternoon beaming with excitement and anticipation to share and hear all the different stories from the day’s adventures.
While our time in New York City has come to an end, the general consensus of the group was that it certainly won’t be our last visit to the Big Apple. Our day finished with a two hour bus ride to New Haven where we arrived at about 11pm, checked into our hotel and fell asleep under the spell of another busy day. Tomorrow, the Yale Model United Nations begins, so be sure to stay posted for our upcoming posts!
