Georgia Tech Essay Prompts
If you've been dreaming of studying at one of the best public research universities, let's talk about Georgia Institute of Technology. The goal here will be to mention not just the obvious - your interest in tech - but everything else that will make you a candidate who will contribute to the school. Why should Georgia Tech, a competitive center for people interested in everything from international businesses to higher-level programming, select you? Be specific, and explain how Georgia Tech will facilitate your growth in ways that no other school can so that it the admissions committee understands what a perfect match you are.
1.‘Why Georgia Tech?’ Essay (same as 2017-18)
Beyond rankings, location, and athletics, why are you interested in attending Georgia Tech? (max 150 words)
It's important for you to let the college know that you've done your research. On the more personal end, what are student groups that you'd want to become involved in? Are there any faith groups that would be important to you? Did you always want to build solar-powered race cars? You can scroll through the list online to see what aspects of non-academic life appeal to you, then tell the university committee why these elements are important to you. It's a time to mention anything you've left out of other parts of your application.
On the more academic end, who are professors who teach specific subjects that are not offered at other universities? The intersection of your interests can best be explored in the Digital Media & Computational Media major, or perhaps you can think of no other school that has a better Aerospace Engineering program. Are you excited about the core curriculum, because it makes sure that you and your peers can better collaborate? If you've remembered some details from a college tour, include them, so that it's clear you have a real investment in the university.
Perhaps you heard of the Alternative Service Break, and you want a chance to learn about disaster relief on the ground, or do you most admire the innovation behind Jill Watson, the university's AI teaching assistant? If you are vague in your description, it'll end up sounding like you could have gone to any tech school in the country, not just this one. Remember to mention why each of the elements that stands out to you aligns with your prior interests, or new ones you could not pursue in high school.
2. Choose your own adventure Georgia Tech Essay
Please choose ONE of the following questions and provide an answer in 150 words or less.
Georgia Tech Essay Writing Tip: You may have the best resume, but if you do not sound like a curious person or a humble one, you might end up in the reject pile. Here's a chance for you to stand out in storytelling that is unrelated to your grades. Think of the idiosyncrasies that will make you stand out from other candidates. You may be surprised, but sometimes the university would like to know more about your hobbies, strange collections, and inside jokes with family. Select the topic that best suits you, instead of trying to game the application.
Georgia Tech Essay, Prompt 1 (same as 2017-18)
Tech's motto is Progress and Service. We find that students who ultimately have a broad impact first had a significant one at home. What is your role in your immediate or extended family? And how have you seen evidence of your impact on them?
Georgia Tech Essay Writing Tip: Here's a chance to tell us what you notice about the world that other people don't. Do not sound boastful, but instead consider yourself as a part of an entire household. If you tell us how you helped your grandmother Skype her brother in southern Greece, what did you learn from watching them talk? If you showed your younger brother how to practice shooting hoops, what surprised you about the experience? Make sure you pick only one element to focus on so that it does not sound like you're making a list of your greatest contributions. It's important not to boast about what you've gifted to your family, but rather to tell us about the people closest to you in ways that make it clear how they've influenced you as well, and how you have maintained reciprocity when you share with each other.
Georgia Tech Essay, Prompt 2 (same as 2017-18)
Georgia Tech is always looking for innovative undergraduates. Have you had any experience as an entrepreneur? What would you like Georgia Tech to provide to further your entrepreneurial interests?
Georgia Tech Essay Writing Tips: What about Georgia Tech will help you achieve your dreams, or what specific facilities will help you advance your research? If you're not exactly a techie, that's not a problem. Tell us about what you've done that's innovative in your field, whether that's orchestral arrangements or street cleaning. Here's a chance to show that you can come up with new strategies and that you are not going to give up before you figure out a resolution, without making empty promises about how much you could achieve in the future.
This is not the time to talk about how great you are. If you had hypothetically designed world's first trolley to Mars, I'd rather want to hear about the struggle to convince people that it could be feasible, or what as a kid what made you fall in love with the planets than I want to know the details of the gas in the motor. You can mention the technical stuff as well, but the point is not to get bogged down in details that will make your reader snooze. How many times did you fail before you had a breakthrough? Once more, here's a chance to talk about climbing, rather than how you've always been at the top of the mountain. Be humble.
As far as the school goes, consider what about its different research hubs will most help you? What about Georgia Tech, which has developed its own anti-hacking robots and has more than a million dollars in funding for nuclear energy projects, will help you specifically? Is it, as the faculty mention, the interdisciplinary research that shapes its students? Or can you make a humorous connection to the fight song "Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech," and tall about how the school's festive spirit will influence your learning? Be creative, and research thoroughly before making your set of claims.
Georgia Tech Essay Prompt 3
Describe your typical day.
Georgia Tech Essay Writing Tip: Let's be honest. If you tell me that on a typical day you go see for tea with Jeff Bezos's assistant, take an airplane to the mountains of Peru, and then perform as a headliner at Summerfest, you've missed the point. While you can leave out the parts of your life that are truly boring, like the seven tests you might have had last week, the exact number of minutes you waited for the school bus, or the time you were almost late for an interview, the university is looking for telling details about what's important to you, other than your grades. You do not need to impress, but rather give us a sense of what you think about in the course of the day.
Do you play Pacman with your friends, drive a tractor through your family's field, or watch re-runs of old horror movies with your cousins? The committee wants to get a sense of your dynamic, and so it's a time to let them what you're obsessed with and what makes you feel grounded. You can simplify the essay by focusing on one element, such as specifically the role that play-acting has in your life, or the times of the day that you go for runs to clear your head, but you want to make sure that you are like a character in your own play.
The advice may be basic, but remember when your English teacher said to "show not tell"? That means that you should consider how to give this response through a series of scenes, rather than summarizing in a way that skips over all the juiciest details.
Final Thoughts on the Georgia Tech Essay Prompts 2018-19
In the end, there's no one school that will give you everything you've imagined. The supplement is a chance to prove that you've really thought about where you're going to spend your upcoming years, more than it is a chance to show the university that you're the only student for the aerospace program. You want to let the committee learn enough about you so that they have a sense of your personality. Here's your chance to shine, in whatever way you see fit.
